Scorching sun, clear water, sand dunes and islands, ponds and lagoons is what the landscape looks like in the middle of the Danube near Danube Bridge 2 at this time of the year. Many admire it and love spending time here. They come to the spot walking, bicycling, driving – or by boat. Fishermen are not as excicted.
The bridge makes a nice shade where one can hide from the sun. On one side is the Bulgarian bank, and just meters away – the Romanian.
On the bank, fishing boats lie about like stranded fish. There are a few fishermen but there are no fish in the shallow water.
Tsetso, a 61-year-old fisherman from Vidin casts his fishing rod yet again. He says he hasn’t seen the Danube this low in more than 40 years. The water is almost gone, the fish too.
The level of the Danube in the Bulgarian stretch remains critically low, for almost a month now it has been below the conditional zero at many places. One can even find a spot to cross the river on foot.
The drought is severely testing navigation on Europe’s longest river; only some cruise ships can pass the shallows. On Sunday, the Danube level near the village of Gomotartsi in Vidin region was below sea level – minus 121 cm; near Novo Selo the Danube Waterway Maintenance Agency reported minus 10 cm. And at km 796 at Danube Bridge 2 the level was only 35 centimetres above sea level.
