Varna Summer Fest Celebrates 30th Anniversary

The Varna Summer International Theatre Festival celebrates its 30th anniversary, the jubilee edition will take place from May 31 to June 10, the organizers of the event said.
According to them, this year’s programme will include a selection of some of the most outstanding performances from Bulgarian theatre, spectacular shows from the international stage, concerts, and special events.
The troupe of the National Theatre Ivan Vazov will set the pace on May 31, on the stage of the Drama Theatre in Varna with the play The Father by Florian Zeller, which won the Askeer award for director Diana Dobreva.
The Bulgarian selection includes nine more titles. The Tail by Zachary Karabashliev, directed by Javor Gardev for the Drama and Puppet Theatre in Pleven with Vladimir Karamazov in the lead role, for which he received the Icarus award. The Master and Margarita based on M. Bulgakov’s novel and directed by Nikolai Polyakov (Sofia’s Youth Theatre) is the play with the most nominations for a National Theatre award.
Kamen Donev will also be a guest as Cyrano de Bergerac in Stoyan Radev’s play of the same name, staged for the Bulgarian Army Theatre. Actress Iva Todorova will present Iva is Online, and the hosts from the Varna Theatre will take part with Amadeus under the direction of Stayko Murdzhev.
The international programme this year features a street show from the Netherlands, screenings of theatrical performances from the stage of Comedie Francaise in Paris, and from London’s West End.
The festival bill is full of parallel events, including street performances, photo exhibitions, book presentations and many other exciting meetings with the world of theatre, the organizers added.
One of the highlights of the upcoming edition is a performance by the world breakdance champions Flying Steps from Germany.
Since the beginning of its 30-year history, the Varna Summer International Festival has reached over 300,000 spectators, presenting over 800 events from Bulgaria and 40 other countries around the world.
The festival was founded in 1993 and its first editions featured selected Bulgarian theatre shows. After 1995, it became an international forum and expanded its programme to include various workshops, exhibitions, conferences, seminars and more.
