Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu Tuesday met with expats from Bulgaria and the Balkans at an Iftar dinner in Istanbul, at which he stressed on cooperation with Bulgaria.
Soylu said the dinner: "We will soon launch a joint project to build a bridge over the Rezovska River, which runs along the border between Turkiye and Bulgaria. Some time ago, I visited Sofia where my Bulgarian colleague and I discussed the technical parameters of this project, which will be the first of its kind and which we are both very keen to see implemented. We will first open the bridge to pedestrians, and then we may adjust it for motor vehicles as well."
The dinner was organized by Rafet Uluturk, President of Bulturk, an association of Bulgarian Turks in Turkiye. It was attended by nearly 500 expats from Bulgaria and the Balkan countries, public figures, mayors, activists and guests.
Soylu emphasized the close ties Turkiye maintains very actively with the Balkans, including Bulgaria, with the expats and their descendants.
The Turkish Interior Minister also said: "This relationship has deep historical roots, and nowadays it is manifested in various directions and dimensions thanks to the two countries’ cooperation." He added: "I myself grew up in an area with many expatriates and I am proud of the cultural diversity they bring. Anatolia has always opened its doors to expatriates when they needed help. This has been the case at different times in history, and this will be the case in the future."
Soylu mentioned a number of gestures the Turkish government has made and will continue to make for the expatriates, including the unilateral waiver of visas for Bulgarian citizens and gas supplies to Bulgaria.
He also noted that as an EU Member State, Bulgaria supports Turkiye’s bid for EU accession.
In a brief statement to BTA after dinner, Soylu described border security cooperation with Bulgaria as "very successful and fruitful". He said it involves joint actions in the fight against illegal migration and organized crime, staff training, information exchange, disaster and emergency response and providing border security. Technological modifications are forthcoming at the two border checkpoints between Turkiye and Bulgaria, Kapikule/Kapitan Andreevo and Hamzabeyli/Lesovo. There are also plans to increase their capacity.
"Our relations with Bulgaria have seen their best period in the last few years," Soylu said.
Suleyman Soylu is a candidate for Istanbul’s second electoral district in the May 14 parliamentary elections. The area (which includes the districts of Bayrampasa, Esenler and Zeytinburnu) has a large population of voters with Balkan and Bulgarian roots.
Turkish media put the number of Bulgarian-born voters in the May 14 presidential and parliamentary elections at 348,000, which makes them the largest single group of voters born outside Turkiye.
