An exhibition of nine panels titled Calvino Here and Elsewhere was unveiled here on Tuesday by the Italian Ambassador to Bulgaria Guiseppina Zarra and the Director of the Italian Cultural Institute in Bulgaria Maria Mazza. The exhibition, which illustrates Italo Calvino’s most popular books, will be free for visitors on Paris St, near the Italian Embassy, until December 10.
Each of the panels is dedicated to a different work by Calvino, containing quotes, opening and closing lines of the works. Some of the reproduced covers are of rare volumes and come from the collections of Laboratorio Calvino and the National Library in Sofia.
Italo Calvino is considered one of the greatest Italian writers of the second half of the 20th century. His works have been translated into more than 45 languages. This exhibition traces the stages of his success. Eight panels offer a visual walk through the covers of Calvino’s most famous books, recreating the journey of his works around the world, said the exhibition organizers, while the ninth panel has been created for the exhibition here.
The event is organized by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Mondadori Foundation and Laboratorio Calvino in cooperation with the Italian Embassy in Sofia and the Italian Cultural Institute in Sofia on the occasion of Calvino’s 100th anniversary.
