Entering Bulgaria from Romania, the legendary Orient Express long-distance passenger train arrived in the early afternoon Tuesday at the Central Railway Station in the Bulgarian city of Ruse. Many residents of the city on the Danube, mainly parents with children, came to see and photograph the legendary train described by Agatha Christie.
The train is making its annual journey from Paris to Istanbul after a two-year hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Elena Todorova who had come with her grandson, Alex, was one of the welcoming crowd. She wanted to show the train to her visiting grandson, who otherwise lives in Italy, she told BTA. The little boy confirmed the train was very interesting, adding that he has also seen the eponymous movie.
In turn, Vladimir Mateev, 64, said he was interested in seeing the train up close. This was not his first sighting, but he had seen it from a distance, not at the station. He was aware a trip with the Orient Express is very costly.
Other welcoming faces included Isabela Dimitrova, who last saw the same train twenty years ago when her daughter was two, as well as ten-year-old Boris who thinks a trip with it would be very interesting, but his mother has told him this is a very luxurious train for rich people.
The 15-car train carries 83 tourists from different countries, mostly from the United States and Great Britain. The menu also includes a local dish typical of each country through which the train passes.
A staff of 47 takes care of the passengers. The experience is like being transported in the past, in the 1920s, one of the stewards told BTA.
While in Ruse, the train will undergo border control formalities and a technical inspection, and its water tanks will be refilled, Ruse Central Railway Station Master Radoslav Turlakov said. Two Romanian diesel engines pulled it to Ruse and BDZ’s new electric Khan Kardam engine will pill it from Ruse to Varna, on the Black Sea, he added.
Orient Express is scheduled to arrive in Istanbul on Thursday. It will stop at Ruse again of September 3, with a stopover of 101 minutes.
Last time, Ruse welcomed the Orient Express on August 27, 2019. Ninety-one tourists from 12 countries were travelling on it.
