On this date in Bulgarian history:
1875: Bulgarian revolutionary committee based in Giurgiu, Romania, decides to organize uprising to liberate Bulgaria from Ottoman rule. Uprising breaks out in April 1876 and is suppressed by Ottoman authorities, but precipitates country’s liberation two years later.
1952: Bishop Evgeni Bosilkov of Nikopol and three more Catholic clergymen are charged with espionage and executed. Beatified by Pope John II during his visit to Bulgaria in 2002.
