Seven ambassadors of the Republic of North Macedonia have been recalled, media in North Macedonia report, referring to decrees of President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova published in the State Gazette on Tuesday.
These include the ambassador to NATO based in Brussels, who will remain in his position until January 15, 2025, the head of North Macedonia’s mission to the UN in Geneva, whose mandate ends on December 1, as well as the ambassadors to the Vatican, Denmark, Kazakhstan, Qatar and Albania.
The decrees do not specify the reasons for the recall of these ambassadors. Radio Free Europe writes on its website that there is a possibility that other ambassadors of the Republic of North Macedonia, who were appointed without being heard in the parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee, could be recalled.
VMRO-DPMNE MPs have launched a procedure to interpret the Foreign Affairs Act regarding the procedure for sending ambassadors. In the previous parliament, it was the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee from VMRO-DPMNE who did not schedule a meeting of the committee to hear some of the ambassadors proposed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
VMRO-DPMNE MP Bojan Stojanoski said that in his opinion the Foreign Affairs Act was not upheld since several ambassadors had been sent "without defending their theses before the MPs". No such interpretation has yet been given by North Macedonia’s parliament, but if it coincides with the VMRO-DPMNE’s position a dozen ambassadors could be returned in this way, Free Europe added.
