I am glad to be back in Bulgaria, said 42nd President of the United States Bill Clinton at a public lecture to students on „The social impact of corporations on future generations with a focus on the importance of food security and sustainability“ in Hall 6 of the National Palace of Culture (NPC).
He noted that he had been to Bulgaria in 1999 and in 2005, when he was invited to participate in a conference. „I remember my visit in 1999, there was a great rally in front of the Alexander Nevsky Monument. There were 30-40,000 people and it was amazing“, Clinton recalled.
„There are problems here. But when I look back, when I became president, there was a brewing conflict in Bosnia where more than 200,000 people were killed, there were more than two million refugees. Then there was another problem, in Kosovo“, he said. In his words, there were rising tensions in the whole Balkan region.
Clinton stressed that at that time there was also a problem in Northern Ireland, which had been going on since 1969 and pointed out he had returned from Belfast a week ago when he attended the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement. Only 35% of peace agreements last more than 10 years, he noted. He made a recapitulation of past events that affected the global economy and outlined potential problems the world is facing.
At the end of the lecture, Clinton advised students not to be afraid to sit at the negotiating table and engage in politics. He said no one is meant to be „successful,“ but they have the means, tools and opportunities to achieve it.
