Bulgaria’s accession to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is one of the main foreign policy priorities for Bulgaria, Atanas Pekanov, the caretaker Deputy Prime Minister in charge of EU funds management, wrote in a Facebook post. "We have a lot of work ahead of us and we must continue to do it confidently, quickly and effectively, without seeking excuses in the political turmoil and even in the current geopolitical situation," Pekanov wrote.
He recalled that last year Bulgaria attended for the first time an OECD ministerial meeting, in Paris, where many meetings were held, including with Secretary General Matthias Corman.
"Subsequently, in January, we received the long-awaited invitation to start the negotiations, and in June – a roadmap for how the negotiations would take place. These are not symbolic gestures or empty promises. These are key steps that will enable Bulgaria to be better integrated into the global economy, to be part of the most developed economies and to catch up with them faster," Pekanov wrote.
The Deputy Prime Minister added that the first meeting of the Interdepartmental Coordination Mechanism, established to improve coordination and step up the action towards OECD accession, was held earlier on Thursday. Work needs to be done on more than 250 legal instruments – bills, decisions, recommendations, declarations, he said.
"It is up to us to have the Initial Memorandum [for Bulgaria’s accession to the OECD] ready by September to ensure that we know what work is ahead. We need to be mobilized and do the work in the best way," the Deputy Prime Minister added.
