The Colibri Publishers, headquartered in Sofia, has been awarded one of the four major National Translation Prize for 2023 of the Italian Ministry of Culture, the Colibri team said on Thursday.
Italy’s Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano attended the event in Rome on April 16. On behalf of Colibri, the prize was received by Niya Filipova, who translated Paolo Giordano’s novel The Solitude of Prime Numbers.
The publishers explained that they applied for the prize in connection with Kiril Kadiiski’s new translation of Dante Alighieri’s Inferno which they described as a "major achievement that has been distinguished by a number or prestigious prizes."
Along with this translation, the Bulgarian version of Italo Calvino’s Difficult Loves (translated by Sava Slavchev) was also noted by the jury.
Colibri have also published books by other modern Italian classics, including Elena Ferrante, Dino Buzzati and Umberto Eco.
The annual National Translation Prizes were established in 1988 and are awarded to Italian and foreign translators and publishers who have contributed to the diffusion of Italian culture abroad and of foreign culture in Italy. The prizes acknowledge the cultural and professional value of the activities of translation and publishing.
