Screenings of classic Bulgarian films are held twice a month within the Bulgarian Summer Cinema under the Stars, hosted by the Soda Bar and Sofia International Film Fest. All screenings begin at 9:30 pm and have English subtitles, the Soda Bar told BTA.
The next screening will take place on August 28 and will be of the 1972 comedy classic With Children at the Seaside (S Detza na More) on August 28.
With Children at the Seaside is a Bulgarian anthology comedy film directed by Dimitar Petrov, called by many the "father of Bulgarian children’s cinema". In addition to With Children at the Seaside, he also directed Hedgehogs Are Born without Spikes, Vasco da Gama from the Village of Rupcha and A Dog in a Drawer. The screenplay was written by Mormarevi Brothers, the music is by Peter Stupel, with cinematography by Krum Krumov. The production stars Georgi Partsalev, Petar Peychev and Ivaylo Dzhambazov, among others.
The film tells the summer stories of a group of children who, together with their parents, are on vacation in Nessebar, on the Black sea. It is divided into two separate stories, both starring the plump teenage boy nicknamed Pipsi. The movie takes a look at the world of the "mature grown-ups" though the eyes of the young.
The first part of the movie, entitled "The Dolphin", follows Pipsi and his gang as they befriend and idolize a local fisherman and playboy Ognyan. Ognyan tells a mesmerizing story of a dolphin to impress one of the boys’ sister, Elena, but the kids soon see through his charming ways.
In the second part of the movie, entitled "The Amateur Photographer", Pipsi accidentally photographs his neighbour, uncle Mancho, at the seaside with a younger co-worker on a pseudo-business trip. Mancho tries to get the incriminating photo back from the boys as hilarity ensues.
The film was shot mainly in Nessebar, but some of the scenes were also shot on the beach of Sunny Beach, which in 1972 was about a kilometre long. Uncle Mancho was played by beloved Bulgarian comedy actor Georgi Partsalev, who was adored by all the child actors on set. After filming wrapped, he even gave each of them a personal gift and took them out to eat.
The Bulgarian classic movie screenings within the Bulgarian Summer Cinema under the Stars will include one more title: the 1982 film A Dog in a Drawer (Kuche v Chekmedzhe) on September 11.
The films Warm (Toplo, 1978), Hedgehogs Are Born without Spikes (Taralezhite Se Razdat bez Bodli, 1971), A Nameless Band (Orkestar bez Ime, 1981) and Ladies’ Choice (Dami Kanqt, 1980) have already been screened.
The events are organized by Soda Bar, Sofia International Film Fest and Zagorka Retro.
