The Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) should not enter into a coalition with anyone in the next National Assembly, BSP’s Sofia chapter leader Ivan Takov said on Monday just hours after Bulgaria’s snap parliamentary elections. According to early results, the BSP for Bulgaria coalition came in fifth in the elections and is one of six political forces entering Parliament.
Takov sees a huge risk of BSP becoming "an AliExpress-style power broker in the right wing of the political arena", which, he said, can kill the party. He noted that the new legislature will be composed solely of right-wing parties with which BSP cannot find common ground.
Takov argued: "If we want to be a real left-wing party, we should not participate in a government with any of the other parliamentary forces. The rightists will be represented in the National Assembly well enough to be able to form a government if they want to."
He finds it inadvisable to poll the BSP members on whether the party should form a coalition in the new National Assembly, and if so, with whom. "Such a poll would shift the responsibility for such an important decision from the leadership to the rank-and-file members," he said.
Takov concluded: "BSP should be a clear-cut opposition and an alternative to all right-wing parties in Parliament rather than acting as a power broker."
