440 Road Accidents Kill 481 in Bulgaria in 2024, 44 Fewer than in 2023

Between the beginning of last year and January 3 of this year, 7,166 serious road traffic accidents occurred in Bulgaria. A total of 481 people died in 440 traffic accidents, which is 44 fewer compared to 2023, said Commissioner Dimitar Michev, head of the Traffic Police department of the National Police. He presented the data during a discussion held on Thursday in the Parliament building, organized by the BSP – United Left parliamentary group.
The number of fatalities has increased in 10 of the 28 regions in the country. In 17 regions, there is a decrease in fatalities, with the largest reduction observed in the Blagoevgrad region. The number of injured people is 9,045, which is 57 fewer than the previous year. A total of 150 people died in populated areas, 109 on first-class roads, 76 on second-class roads, 69 on third-class roads, and 44 on municipal roads. On highways, 33 people lost their lives.
Last year, Traffic Police issued 3,394,540 violation statements and penalty decrees.
A total of 3,000,310 drivers were checked. Documents for administrative violations were issued to 238,590 individuals. A total of 33,413 driver’s licenses were revoked.
During the past year, 11,041 people were caught driving under the influence of alcohol. Another 4,279 drivers were found driving under the influence of drugs. A total of 1,051 drivers refused to provide an alcohol sample, and 1,676 refused to be tested for drugs.
Unlicensed drivers identified totaled 7,657, said Commissioner Michev.
